New Teacher Resource Prompts Teachers to Listen, Learn, Share Practices to Improve Student Achievement.
Teachers build the foundation for freedom. We are committed to providing the support they need to help every student succeed and become a full participant in our democracy.
-U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige
April 21, 2004 - U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige announced a new teacher resource initiative designed to engage some of the nation's best teachers and education experts in sharing techniques for raising student achievement. The teacher resource plan, entitled The Teacher to Teacher Initiative, will also keep teachers informed of the latest strategies and research on educational best practices in the classroom.
"Over the last year," Paige said, "senior Department officials and staff have been visiting schools around the country and have seen firsthand the impressive results of many successful teachers." The Teacher to Teacher resource initiative will showcase these achievements so they can be emulated as a model for new teachers.
Paige sees highly qualified teachers as an essential resource in addressing the immediacy of NCLB mandates, "Effective teachers are the key to fulfilling the promise of the No Child Left Behind Act."
The 4-pronged teacher resource features:
- Teacher Roundtables
- Summer Workshops
- Research-to-Practice Summit
- Teacher Email Updates
The Teacher to Teacher resource initiative will "highlight real world examples of how these teachers translate education research into practice that works in the classroom - they are doing what it takes to eliminate the achievement gap for our at-risk students."
Also included in the teacher resource initiative is a new website - www.teacherquality.us - with information about effective practices and initiatives at the state and local levels, as well as upcoming teacher-oriented events.
